Isn't there any "modern" modern cities? (in social science terms)?

I've a social science project on hand, but can't find a proper def. of an actual "modern city"; the most recent city is sparta =P. And nice, paper-based encyclopedias are not an option, since there's none available -. - .Can someone help me out really quick?? I'd be really thankful =]]
