Aspirin causes gastrointestinal bleeding....then what?

taking aspirin for a prolonged time may cause gastric ulcers as it thins the stomach mucus lining....my question is....1. how or why does stomach mucus get thinner and 2. once the stomach bleeds..where does the blood go and what problems does it cause? thank you for your replies.
