Why does the US gov't subsidize Amtrak?

Because the government subsidizes all forms of transportation. Governments build roads, bridges, tunnels, airports, pay for air traffic control and security, and m transit systems. Penger rail keeps cars off the roads and eases pressure on the airways for trips under 500 miles. Rail is more fuel-efficient than other forms of transportation and isn't as affected by the weather. It's part of the larger transportation plan.
